This may sound strange, but at Mandalay we always tried to surprise our season ticketholders with our renewal mailing. Surprise? Each year we came up with something new, different and unique to surprise our season ticketholders with for renewal. We didn’t want our renewal mailing to become predictable like a magazine subscription invoice. Here are some of the things we did in our renewal mailings for our teams at Mandalay:
Too big for the mail box envelope. This envelope was made of sturdy poster board stock. It had a wild full-bleed photo of our mascot tossing a bucket of water on an umpire during a game (one of our favorite ballpark shticks). The envelope was 15 x 28 inches. You pulled a tab to open it. Let me ask you: If you were one of our season ticketholders could you not open that right way? C’mon, your curiosity would propel you to open it. Inside was a mock newspaper that highlighted the season featuring stories about the team, the mascot, some fans, and the ballpark. If you were a season ticketholder, it would be tough for you not to smile and feel good while leafing through our newspaper.
Also inside the envelope was a two-page (and sometimes three-page) letter personally addressed to the season ticketholder from the President of the team and an invoice. I’ve heard from plenty of teams that season ticketholders would not read more than a one-page letter. If the letter was from the team’s accountant, I agree. However, our letters were informative and fun to read.
The invoice was simple to read and understand.
We first used this large envelope idea for our initial renewal mailing with the Dayton Dragons in 2000. This envelope went out to full season ticketholders and all partial season ticketholders. The reaction from our fans was so positive that we used the same concept at each one of our teams.
